One of the things I seem to do fairly well is have a healthy walk with God. It is a journey where you are constantly learning and changing. I am far from perfect, obviously and not writing this because I will be a pastor one day.
Personally, being a Christian has changed my life, improved it, made it so much lighter; I don’t get why others want to bang their heads against a wall like they are solving a Christian equation from Stephen Hawkins.
I think many people make Christianity harder than it is.
Again, you need to know that this is not A Holy Experience and I’m not even trying it to be. So don’t cuss me out, coz I will cry. Just take this lightheartedly.
Anyway, I got serious with God in mid-2013. I didn’t come to Him with very sincere intentions. All of a sudden I had no job and really thought the lack of shopping would kill me; so I went running to Him.
“I can’t do my nails God, save me,”I wailed.
I have always been real and told God, “Look, I seriously do not know if you exist or if Jesus died on the cross for me. I was not there. If this thing is going to work, I have to see evidence that you are real.”
Then I decided to make Him a real invisible friend. You know, like the ones we made up when we were kids, invited to our tea parties and poured our invisible tea for.
So from day one, I made Him my friend. And when that happens, everything else just falls into place….you want to know what pleases Him and saddens him, you want to spend time with Him, you seek Him more, you want to read His word to see what He says in it, you believe His Word 100 percent.
So do that first. Give it a try. Because when God is an arbitrary figure in the sky who is not real for you….your walk is in trouble from the day one.
I came up with a list of things that show what Christianity is and is not. Again I know I’m not a theologian, please……..
What Christianity is:
It’s very simple. As Christians our only goals should be to be more like Jesus and to have a real relationship with God. That is it.
For the first point, read any gospel; read Mark and write down what Jesus was. What characteristics describe Him? For example, Jesus had so much compassion. Everywhere he went things moved him to tears. Write down all Jesus was. That should be your goal on your journey. People should see Jesus in you before you say you are a Christian.
Jesus has transformed me. Before, I was so mean to people, if you wronged me I would plot my revenge and carry it out execution style. I am still a fire cracker but now I am at a 3 instead of 30000. Plus I would never, ever, ever forgive you. Bitterness.com. Now I forgive, have become the bigger person and let things slide. Some people have really hurt me, but since I know all things work for my good (Romans 8:28) I know they are playing whatever role God choose them to play in my life, to get me to some higher place.
When things are bad, read the story of Joseph and see how he behaved. Dude was crying when he saw his brothers, who -excuse me- sold him to slavery. But they were playing an evil role in his movie; no way he would become a big shot in Egypt without his brothers selling him first.
Comprende? Forgive. Let it go. It is for your own good.
Now about a relationship with God.
Imagine your closest relationship; say your best friend. How many times do you talk, how many times do you touch base, how often do you things to please and surprise them, you know what their likes and dislikes, you know how they sound, you know them, you are not their friend to get something from them; the relationship is give and take.
Now do the exact same thing with God. He has proven Himself so real, I literally just can’t see him. If you are not sure, do what I did…..tell Him you need evidence …He can handle it.
I will add one more thing. Read The Purpose Driven Life. Apparently more than 30 million copies of this book have been sold. I do not get it. Do people buy it and not read it? Study it, write freaking notes, memorize the book.
It was wonderful to read in it that God was after real friendships; after I have always been real.
That his closest friendships in the Bible, Job, David, Abraham were so real.
Job is my favorite saying, “What strength do I have that I should still hope? Do I have the strength of a stone? Is my flesh bronze?” (Job 6: 11-12) And David, “All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. “(Psalms 6:6) A tad dramatic, if you asked me.
If you especially have wondered what God wanted you to do when He created you, read this book.
So that is 3 things. Strive to be like Jesus. Have a real relationship with God. Study “The Purpose Driven Life.”
What it’s not.
Christianity is not doing things to compare yourself with others and feel better about yourself. “I go to church and he is a drunk so I’m better than him.” Wrong.
It is not judging others. Like, “That person is going to hell and I’m going to heaven.” Excuse me, when you have a relationship with God, do you know how much work is involved? You think God asking you to forgive someone who has clearly offended you is easy. You have no time to look at any other person.
It is not your responsibility to say someone else is not a Christian. Like last week, Madea was on Jimmy Fallon and did some funny skit and a million “Christians” wrote to Tyler Perry on Facebook saying he is not a Christian. Leave him alone, go try to create a Madea or read your Bible or start working out.
Christianity is not for lazy people…Jesus calls you to extremely high standards of excellence. You will become busy. You will do things you have never done before. You won’t have time to be mean to Tyler Perry on Facebook.
If you go biweekly to church, light the candles in church, attend every conference, are always invited for dinner with your pastor, buy all your pastors books, do anything to be on the pastors inner circle AND DO NOT HAVE A REAL, BREATHING RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, you are off the mark. I bet being a pastor can not be easy but the worst thing you will ever, ever, ever, do as a pastor is make it about you and not direct people to God.
People in general like to abdicate their personal responsibility and put it on someone else. “I will only lose weight when I get a trainer.” “I will only write a book when Elizabeth Gilbert buys me coffee one day.” Same thing in Christianity. People turn over all the work they have to do to their pastors. Then complain when your pastor turns out to be a wolf in sheeps clothing. (Matthew 7:15)
They listen when a deranged conman and wolf says, “God told me to tell you to deposit 1,500,000 USD person in my account.”
WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION PEOPLE!!!
Personally, I am SOOOOOOO hungry for God in a week I just don’t listen to my pastors sermon, I listen to like 10 or more from Rick Warren, Jentezen Franklin, Toure and Sarah Roberts and more. I can’t miss our weekly Bible Study. We are working through The Armor of God (looooooove you Priscilla Shirer). I worship multiple times in aweek. Actually Sweden is not cutting it for me any more in terms of church, I want to move to Rick Warrens church or Jentezen Franklins where they have service on Wednesday. So its either going to be Orange County or Gainsville, Georgia. (Jesus is a consuming fire)
I also have a PhD in detecting shady pastors a mile away. Some of these people are shady. Even if they have huge platforms they could be in cahoots with the devil himself.
But how would you know that when you have taken all the attention off God to a so called pastor? All these “evangelicals” telling you who to vote for. Who would God want you to vote for? Of course you have no idea. Irresponsibility.com. Get to know God and straight away the truth will seperate the wolves from sheep.
People in leadership roles…..worship leader, whatever…these positions do you not automatically grant you a free pass to heaven. Plus God does not have favorites. You are not holier than anyone. You still have to do all the work required.
(Stop looking for these people for guidance. Stop saying they are so blessed, they are anointed….stop looking down on yourself, stop disqualifying yourself. We are all special and gifted and annointed. Just not in the same way)
Christianity is not a race among Christians. Some Christians do things to appear “stronger” than someone else. There is no race..it is not the Christian Olympics….. calm yourself down.
When you do things in public to get the praise and applause of other Christians and in secret do not care what you do ..then you have it so wrong. That is, when all you do is driven by what the Christians in your church think of your actions, not what God thinks……you are way off the mark. It does not matter how many people praise your actions publicly, they don’t hold meetings with God to report their findings. The main person who matters here is GOD.
Christianity is not religion. When you make Christianity a list of things you need to do, others you can’t do…it will be a tedious thing. It is not a boring list of chores you need to get through. You fully enjoy it when it begins with having a relationship with God and morphing from the person you were before to more of Jesus.
A few final words.
When God is not real to you and Jesus has not transformed you, the words you speak won’t be very nice. Watch out for your tongue. Biggest sign you do not get it. You do hopefully realize your “fruits” speak louder than saying, “I am a Christian.” (Matthew 7:20)
Christianity does not mean you can be a baby Christian for decades (Ephesians 4:14) and does not mean you can dabble in whatever you want. It will change your life. Some of these changes will be hard and uncomfortable. If you are the same person you were after you met Jesus years ago..something is wrong.
Finally, God is not a genie. You do not rub Him like a lamp then a Bentley is dropped on your doorstep the next day. God can take you to a desert of nothingness for 5 years (for your own good). And after that bless you beyond your wildest dreams. Get to know Him, not what is in His Hand. Stop getting close to God because you want a husband, a baby specifically from your womb, a big car and house, a private jet and an Iphone 8.
